Elaboration of biomaterials for therapeutic applications

People: Joël Lyskawa, Patrice Woisel

Our activity is based on the chemical modification of titanium surfaces by therapeutic agents for biomedical applications. The aim of this work is to allow and favor the titanium prosthesis integration in the human body. This could be achieved either by grafting a drug delivery system onto the prosthesis either by covalently bonding the therapeutic substance onto the prosthesis surface. For this purpose, well-defined functional polymers containing a specific anchor, able to covalently graft onto the TiO2 surface, are synthesized using Controlled Radical Polymerization techniques such as RAFT or ATRP. After their covalent bonding onto the titanium surface, these polymers could be further post-functionalized by therapeutic agents which could be chosen by the surgeon.
